Can Dogs Eat Jicama? Is Jicama Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat jicama? You may be asking this because you’re interested in giving your dog a taste of the sweet veggie, or maybe they already snuck a nibble of jicama and you want to make sure their health isn’t at risk. Humans can eat jicama, so is it also safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is yes, jicama is safe for dogs to eat. Jicama is a root vegetable that has a variety of uses in human cuisine, and its benefits can be reaped by your pup as well.

However, as with all human foods, you must consult your veterinarian before feeding your dog any new dietary additions. Here’s what you should know about feeding jicama to your dog.

How Is Jicama Good For Dogs?

Jicama is a fantastic source of fiber for your pup. Fiber is necessary for digestive function. It’s also low in calories, which is beneficial if your dog needs to watch their weight, and has loads of vitamin C, which boosts your pup’s immunity.

Because jicama is sweet and crunchy, some dogs who don’t enjoy vegetables may enjoy jicama. It is more fruit-like, which can be tasty if your pup has a sweet tooth. If your dog likes apples, they will most likely enjoy jicama.

Your dog can eat jicama raw or cooked. Raw jicama has a distinct crunch and sweetness that many dogs — and humans — enjoy.

It’s important to note that neither dogs nor humans should eat the leaves, seeds, stems, or skin of jicama, as these contain a toxin that isn’t good for either of us. Most, if not all, store bought jicama will already have the leaves, seeds, and stems removed.

You will have to wash and peel the jicama to safely prepare it for consumption. After washing and peeling this veggie, cutting it into bite-sized pieces is the best way to prepare it for your dog to minimize choking risk.

You can cook the jicama to make it softer, but it’s not necessary. Some jicama comes prepackaged in clean, bite-sized pieces for easier preparation.
