Deafness in dogs is a condition that happens when a dog cannot hear. The condition can result in a total or partial loss of hearing.

The cause of the condition can be a number of things. For example, some of the common causes include:
- Ear infections
- The aging process
- Cognitive issues
- Tumors
- Certain medicines (including antibiotics)
- Metals (including mercury and lead)
- Nerve issues
- Hypothyroidism
Unfortunately, some dog breeds at more predisposed to this condition than others. Some of those breeds include:
- Miniature Poodle
- Maltese
- German Shepherd
- Cocker Spaniel
- Jack Russell Terrier
- Boston Terrier
- Dalmatian
Additionally, some dogs are born with the condition. This is called congenital deafness.
Treatments for Deafness in Dogs
Firstly, your vet will ask about your dog’s symptoms. Secondly, your vet will ask about your dog’s full medical history. This will include any breed-specific problems.
Thirdly, a full physical examination will be carried out. Special attention will be paid to the ears. Additionally, hearing tests and an examination of the ear canal will be carried out.
Treatment depends on the underlying condition. Unfortunately, there is no current cure for a dog born with the condition.
However, in the case of an infection causing the issue, the infection can be treated with medication. As always, if your vet prescribes your dog any medicine, make sure to stick to the correct dose and frequency instructions. Also, complete the full course of medicine.
