A veteran who served in Afghanistan formed a strong bond with the black Labrador Retriever who worked by his side as a bomb detection dog. Sergeant Dave Heyhoe was the handler for Treo, a service dog in the British military, for many years. And when they both retired, Heyhoe adopted the pup to keep as part of his family. The two enjoyed their lives in peace until, at the age of 14, Treo passed away.

Heyhoe wanted a tribute to the dog that had meant so much to him in both his time in the armed forces and his life of retirement. He decided to get a tattoo of Treo's paw print and a poem on his calf as a memorial. But that wasn't enough. Heyhoe requested that the tattoo artist put some of Treo's ashes in the ink so that the dog would forever be a part of him.

The tattoo read, in part, "I will lay down my life for you and expect nothing in return. I protect my Dad with my life, and would gladly take a bullet in his place." Heyhoe feels a sense of peace, as if Treo is still by his side now. He believes the tattoo completes him. It's a fitting tribute to a hero dog who saved lives by finding bombs and protecting dozens of British troops from harm. Treo has passed, but he certainly will not be forgotten.
