For the teens at Kent County Juvenile Detention Center, the Humane Society of West Michigan is a means to a better state of mind. The Society’s project called, Building Adolescent Responsibility and Compassion (BARC) brings dogs into the center for the youth to train and rehabilitate. The act of training itself becomes the motivator for them to strengthen their senses of self worth. When they succeed in teaching the dogs a new trick, they experience first hand the rewards of hard work and cooperation. For more information, go to hswestmi.org.
