Rescued dog given second “Chance” with police department

When the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) first got the call about a dog chained outside of a house in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, without food or water, they knew they had to act fast.

Sure enough, the poor German Shepherd was in awful shape. RSPCA staff members were able to rescue the dog from the Bradford home, but after years of neglect and mistreatment by uncaring owners, the Shepherd had some serious behavioral issues — and little hope of ever finding a happy home.

Luckily, not long after the rescued dog was brought to the RSPCA kennels, a West Yorkshire police officer came for a visit to the shelter. As soon as he spotted the shy but intelligent Shepherd, the officer knew the dog could have a wonderful future as a police K-9. Knowing he was taking a huge chance by giving the German Shepherd a second chance, the police officer settled on the perfect name for his new criminal-catching canine — Chance, of course.

After only a short time with Chance, it was clear the pooch had what it takes to protect and serve.

“He immediately demonstrated some of the raw ability needed to become a general purpose police dog and was allocated to me, to replace my current police who is due to retire,” says Police Constable (PC) Mick Kilburn, Chance’s new handler.

PC Kilburn explains that his bond with Chance extends far beyond that of a coworker.

“As a police dog handler these dogs become your life—it’s not a 9-5 job—you take them home with you, care and look after them 24/7” he tells BBC News.

“They aren’t just a tool that is used by the police,” PC Kilburn adds, “they become your work partner, friend and protector.”

As Chance begins his new life as a beloved member of the police department, PC Kilburn can’t help but look back at how far his amazing dog has come.

“I couldn’t be more proud of how well Chance has done,” PC Kilburn says.

Shelter staff members are quite proud of Chance, too.

“Everyone at the local RSPCA branch is thrilled that Chance is getting this second shot at life with the West Yorkshire Police in such a useful and heroic role,” an RSPCA spokesperson said in a statement. “There are so many rescue animals just waiting for a new home and Chance is a great ambassador for rescue dogs everywhere.”
