A couple from the UK are stuck in Morocco until they can raise the money needed to adopt a stray dog, per Metro.

Alex Hunter and Doug Oldrey have been traveling in a campervan as part of a charity rally since July. But when they were driving through Morocco, a five-week-old dog ran in front of their van.

The couple quickly named the dog Tagha, falling in love with the pup. And, they aren’t leaving Morocco until they’re able to adopt her.

A Chance Meeting With a Stray Dog

“She ran out in front of our car on day four in Morocco and was around five weeks old with no mother or any hope of survival,” explained Alex. “We couldn’t possibly leave her behind so whilst the five-month adoption process is underway we plan to continue to explore beautiful Morocco.”

Alex, an occupational therapist, and Doug, a prosthetist, intended to on the Mongol Rally after completing their studies in 2020. But when the pandemic hit, they had to throw themselves into their work.

Earlier this year, they felt they were able to leave work and plan their own rally. They named it Long Loop Rally. They’re well on their way to hitting the £3000 they aimed to raise for charity. So far, they’ve visited almost 40 countries across Europe and North Africa. From France to Turkey, they traveled the breadth of Europe. But they’re currently stuck in Morocco as they make arrangements to bring the stray dog with them.

Waiting To Adopt Tagha

“We became stranded on the last loop of the rally in Morocco in order to complete the adoption process for our newest family member – Tagha the Moroccan rescue pup,” said Alex.

“But we can’t express how much we have loved living in our car the past few months, and have learned so much about ourselves and each other and meeting people along the adventure.”
