Chesbro has been at the Humane Society of the Desert for six years, and is still waiting for his forever home.

The shelter dog was six months old when he arrived at the center in North Palm Springs, California, after someone found him alone in the desert and brought him in.

Coming a Long Way in California

“Chesbro is very calm, gentle, and loves to explore. He has such a sweet way about him, and we can tell he so badly wants to trust new humans and win their affection and love,” Cali Trevino, who takes care of the shelter’s social media and marketing, told PEOPLE.

Being a feral dog when he first arrived, the California pup had very little in the way of human contact. As a result, he was quite shy when it came to meeting potential dog parents. However, he’s put in a lot of work, and is looking for his forever home six years later.

He’s not as extroverted and outgoing as some canines, but volunteers have helped him become more sociable. “I think it’s just harder to find that patient, understanding adopter,” said Trevino. She explained that a lot of prospective dog parents want an affectionate dog who’ll be all over them straight away.

His Dream Dog Parents

Chesbro will open up to new people in time, particularly when he’s offered treats, and enjoys food, swimming, and journeys in the car – as well as spending time with other dogs.

“His ideal home would be a relaxed environment with semi-active owners who would take Chesbro out for adventures,” Trevino continued. “He would be totally comfy with other pets in the home, including dogs and cats! He does love his walks … but is also in for a movie-watching napping kind of day too!”
