An animal rescued by Dallas police officers has everyone involved wondering if it’s a dog or a coyote. To solve the mystery, rescuers are administering a DNA test.

Rescuers Administer DNA Test to Determine What Mystery Animal Is

Members of the Dallas Police Department discovered a light brown animal near a dumpster while on patrol earlier this week. They nicknamed the creature Toast, but can’t tell whether the animal is a puppy or a baby coyote.

The officers warmed Toast up in their patrol vehicle and the mystery animal was later surrendered to Dallas Animal Services. While the police believed the animal looked like a coyote pup, a Wildlife Animal Services Officer asserted that Toast was a dog.

A DNA test was administered to determine if the creature is a coyote or a different wild species. The results will decide where Toast is placed.

Dog or Coyote? Twitter Weighs In

Rebecca Lopez, WFAA TV’s senior crime and justice reporter, tweeted out pics of the adorable fur baby.
“Meet this little pup named Toast. Is he a Coyote or a dog?” she asked. “@dallaspolice_ rescued him yesterday. Dallas Animal Services isn’t sure so they are doing DNA to confirm. What do you think? @wfaa”

The internet was more than willing to weigh in on the “dog or coyote?” debate.

“Coyotes aren’t born until March at the earliest and this dog puppy looks to be at least 6 weeks old?? It has no coyote features,” a Twitter user who goes by @InkDogArt opined.

“Its a pup. Just not sure if he’s a dog or coyote pup,” another Twitter user offered (un)helpfully.

“Maybe a dog and coyote met at a water fountain in the park…things got heated…tah day! Cog!” a Twitter user (with a dirty mind) suggested.

“100% cuteness!” @texanvixter declared.

We can all agree on that, no matter what the DNA results show!
