Surrendered Dog Nears 500 Days in Shelter Without Getting a Second Chance

Five hundred days is a long time to wait for anything, let alone a family. Yet that is the milestone Storm, a surrendered pup, is about to reach after spending nearly a year and a half searching for a home. A heartfelt video is now putting the shelter dog’s story in front of thousands of viewers in the hope that someone will change her future.

Surrendered dog about to complete 500 days in shelter waits to get adopted

The video was shared by the Instagram account @adopt_storm_and_friends, which regularly highlights Storm and other shelter dogs looking for adopters. Text on the screen reads, “Tomorrow is Storm’s 500th day in the shelter.” It also explains that there have been no major updates about an adoption or even a foster placement. So, Storm continues to spend every day at the shelter waiting for a second chance.

The clip follows the Terrier mix as she is taken outside for a walk. Although she gets a break from her kennel, she appears quiet and withdrawn throughout the outing. Her body language suggests that the long stay has taken a toll.

Storm is currently staying at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Long Island, New York. According to the caption, she arrived there after being surrendered by her previous owner. The reason was that she did not get along with another dog in the home. Since then, she has continued waiting for someone willing to give her a fresh start.

The post describes Storm as a “beautiful low-rider” who weighed around 50 pounds when she entered the shelter. Her caretakers also say she is shy at first and needs time to trust new people. However, they believe she is worth the patience and will eventually become a loving companion.

As Storm approaches Day 500, those caring for her are asking people to share her story. Their hope is simple. They want her next milestone to be adoption, not another day waiting behind shelter doors.
