A rescue dog video is winning hearts for showing Melvin treating rare UK sunshine like a personal holiday. The adopted pup, a nine-year-old from Cyprus, stretched flat on his back outside while another dog rested nearby inside. His owner, Karen Maher, filmed the moment and joked about it in on-screen text, saying her “Cyprus rescue dog” was enjoying the sun finally being out in the UK.
Senior rescue dog soaks up the sun by lying on his back
The video, posted by @maherandhounddogtraining one week ago, showed Melvin sunbathing near an open doorway. In it, he lay on the patio with his belly up, paws loose, and face turned toward the light. Maher, an accredited dog behaviorist, shared in the caption that Melvin is likely a mix of a Terrier, Chihuahua, and Miniature Pinscher.
The rescue dog video also carried a sweet backstory. Maher wrote that Melvin was born in a dog pound in Cyprus. A friend told her about his “fun loving spirit” and said he “just wanted to belong.” Maher first tried to find him a home, but he got no interest. Eventually, she decided to bring him over herself.
Melvin was named in memory of Maher’s aunt Melanie, who passed shortly before the adoption. In the caption, Maher called him “the brightest dog I’ve ever known” and said he was easy to train. She also described him as “absolutely brilliant off lead” and “a legend.” The account added one practical note, saying Melvin moved after about 90 seconds in direct sun.
The reel’s joke landed because Melvin looked completely committed to soaking up every warm patch. His relaxed pose made the moment feel even funnier, especially beside the caption about his Cyprus roots meeting the UK weather.
Viewers loved his dramatic sun session in the comments. One wrote, “Mine is the same! When people ask what breed I say “Cypriot Sun Dog.” Another added, “I love that the British dog is safely next to the shade.” A third joked, “Roasting at 180.”
