When the parents of two Golden Retrievers learned they were having a little baby, they worried that Winnie and Scarlett would feel sidelined — but what happened was completely different. Instagram user @winniethegoldenpupper captured that exact fear in a video that is now melting hearts everywhere. The on-screen text reads, “One of our biggest fears about having a baby was that our dogs would feel replaced,” but scene after scene, the story changes.
Golden Retrievers meet baby and become his protectors, best friends and so much more
When the little baby arrives, instead of moping, the two Golden Retrievers step up. They watch him sleep, take care of him, snuggle beside him during nap time, and eventually become playmates, stroller companions, and holiday sidekicks. The video shows them swimming together and peering out the window as a team, becoming Jack’s first best friends. And as the video’s caption reads, “Turns out we didn’t take love away from our dogs… their family just got a little bigger ??.”
There is something magical about the way these two dogs take on the role of protectors and best friends, but it is all because dogs are pack animals — they are naturals at caring for their own. When a new baby enters a secure home, they see a new, tiny member of their pack instead of sensing a threat. Golden Retrievers, especially, were bred to work alongside people and read emotions, which makes them naturals at gentle guardianship — so getting a sibling-like bond with a new addition to the family is only natural.
Viewers loved to see this relationship. As a viewer wrote, “That’s what you did. You included them. You trusted them,” adding, “You didn’t replace them. How lucky for all of them, baby included. So wonderful to see all that love,” and that is precisely what happened.
The little baby may make new friends later, but his Golden Retrievers happen to be his first two best friends.
