Video: Dog’s Reason for Being ‘Obsessed’ With Coffee Table Is Heartwarming

Most dogs have their “spot” — that one place where they feel safest. Maybe it is a bed, a patch of sunlight on the floor, or the corner of a couch. For one dog named Emma, it turned out to be the space under the coffee table. And while it seemed random at first, her owners soon realized there was a very special reason why she never left it.

The owner of internet-famous Golden Retrievers Ellie and Emma recently shared a video revealing Emma’s long-standing and slightly unusual obsession with their living room coffee table.

Over the years, Emma had been repeatedly caught curled up under it, lounging beside it, or fast asleep like it’s her designated haven. While the family had multiple dog beds throughout the house, it was always the coffee table that Emma returned to. At first, they assumed it was just a quirky puppy phase, but she never grew out of it.

Then the owner shares a touching realization. The onscreen text reveals, “This is the first spot Ellie slept by her.” The video cuts to flashback clips of a younger Emma and her older sister Ellie playing by the table. One especially sweet moment shows Ellie lying next to the coffee table while Emma, then a small puppy, sleeps inside it. Another shows Ellie playfully engaging with her around that same spot. The coffee table, it turns out, was the site of their earliest bonding moments.

With 5.2 million views and 243K likes, the video’s comments section quickly turned into a lovefest for Emma and Ellie. One viewer wrote, “That is so cute!! Some things never change.” Another added, “Awww Emma is so adorable and so is Ellie.” Others reflected on their own dogs’ similar behaviors, with one user sharing, “It could be her safe spot… my dog used to do that too as a puppy.”

Emma’s attachment to the coffee table likely stems from a mix of memories, emotions, and comfort. Dogs are known to associate certain spots or objects with strong positive feelings. For Emma, that table is not just furniture. It is a place tied to the earliest and happiest memories of growing up with her big sister.
