Rescued from neglect in a Bronx apartment building, Baby Gina is now embracing a new life filled with love. NYC Second Chance Rescue — the organization that stepped in to help her — recently shared uplifting photos of the once-abused dog in her new home.
Dog gets adopted after recovering from abuse and neglect
Baby Gina was severely malnourished and in critical condition. NYC Second Chance Rescue stepped in to save the young pup, who was just a few months old at the time. The rescue organization shared her plight on Facebook, describing her as “skin and bones,” and detailing her health struggles, which included vomiting and weakness.
The nonprofit acted swiftly and rushed Baby Gina to their partner veterinary clinic for urgent, intensive care. Initial medical evaluations revealed that she was suffering from anemia, a urinary tract infection, and the dangerous risk of refeeding syndrome — a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body struggles to process food after prolonged starvation. Her fragile state required constant monitoring and specialized care from a dedicated team of veterinarians.
Despite the odds, Baby Gina’s condition stabilized gradually as she began to put on weight and regain her strength. The nonprofit also shared heartwarming updates on her progress, and supporters followed her journey with hope and encouragement. Meanwhile, authorities began investigating the neglect that had nearly cost her life.
On January 31, the rescue organization posted recovery photos of the once-abused dog and announced that she was finally well enough to leave the hospital and move into her new home. “Gina’s adopter is no stranger to SCR and has adopted with us before,” the nonprofit wrote. “Gina is moving into a beautiful home and has gained two fur siblings: a rat terrier and a poodle.” With a big yard to explore and an abundance of toys, Baby Gina is now living the life every dog deserves.
