Dog Sharing ?

I have recently found out about dog sharing, where people who can't cope through illness or infirmity or because they are suddenly working away or for whatever reason are finding it hard not to neglect their dog and wonder what to do about it. So dog sharing is where you share the care of your dog with someone else in the local community. It could be anything from occassional walks to a second home and anything in ... (continued)

Dog Won't Play Anymore

My six year old Peke used to play tug of war or chase stuffed toys. In the past seven months, we moved from China back to the USA, stayed 3 weeks in Nebraska, then four months in St. Augustine, FL before finally finding a place to stay for this year in Lakaland..I'm renting a room there. I can't get Angel, my Peke to play anymore -- not anything at all -- hide & seek, tug of war, chase a toy, nothing ..am a bit w... (continued)

Can I leave a puppy alone during the day?

I am looking to get a german shepard for my home and am unsure what to do with it during the day. I live in the tropics and have a small&enclosed yard that i could leave him to wander in with an empty maids quarters for shade if its hot. Or I have a spare bedroom inside with tile floors, a/c and plenty of room to play. I work 10hr days but come home for 2 hrs at lunch so i will be there often to play, train, etc... (continued)

How to Dog- sit?

I'm going to be taking care of my neighbour's Golden when she goes on vacation. I know how to take care of the dog, brush it's teeth, feed it, walk it, etc, but because I do not have a dog of my own I was wondering, what do you pet owners expect of your pet- sitter? Do you have any special expectations? I know how to care for a dog, please don't think I'm asking how much do I walk it or anything, I'm just wondering... (continued)

drought and flood: a dog's life

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that one day I would become weather-obsessed. But I have. Forever observing our rain gauge levels…and tracking the Bureau of Meteorology radar with more than a casual interest. After living through twelve years of drought, clouds have taken on new meaning. In this part of Australia, summers have become intensely hot, dry and dusty. When the wind blows, grit sticks to... (continued)

rodger and dodger: two ferrets doing a dog's job

As you may recall from “a labrador with no taste for rabbit”, our lazy Lila has been reluctant to help control Australia’s exploding rabbit population. This summer the plague on our property has reached a critical mass where doing nothing is no longer an option. So, for the first time ever, we called upon a ferreter and his furry team of two for assistance. Naturally, Lila had never before encountered ferrets ... (continued)

for lila the labrador, each day is an adventure

I wouldn’t say that I’m a particularly downbeat person, but I do find myself sometimes greeting the day with a touch of trepidation. Worrying needlessly that I won’t be able to get through my long list of whatever. Our Labrador Lila, however, awakens each morning with a sense of adventure. Bursting with anticipation of all the amazing things the day might bring! I think to myself: THAT is the way to live. Althou... (continued)
