The volunteer gushes, The Dude abides

Dispatch from the Espanola Valley Humane Society, September 11, 2011

The Dude arrived late last week, his head the typical Shar-Pei tumble of folds and pleats. I love the looks of this breed — unappealing to some, bizarrely beautiful to me. But with a massive tumor-like abscess clinging just below his left ear, this Shar-Pei was even more distinguishable in appearance than most.

The Dude, Shar-Pei mix with evidence of abscess still visible

I didn’t meet The Dude until after the swelling had been drained, but the remainder was hardly inconspicuous. Bulbous and still tender, it must've induced quite the pressure headache. Our shelter veterinarian guessed it was the result of an injury or bite that had become infected (as opposed to a disease or illness).

Though he came in as a stray, The Dude probably had not been on his own for long. He could stand to lose a few pounds and doesn’t show a particular interest in treats or food the way those that have gone hungry often do. In fact, what he craves most is attention, dashing all remnants of the Shar-Pei reputation for aloof indifference. He greets each newcomer with kisses and nuzzles, and after a few minutes in his kennel, he places his paw on my knee as if to say, “Thanks for dropping by, old friend.”

Like the back stories of so many shelter animals, I may never know The Dude’s. How does a well-fed, well-socialized, neutered young dog wind up with Animal Control, a cyst the size of Texas on his face? I try to take a cue from The Dude himself who seems more concerned with where his next belly rub is coming from than how he ended up in kennel 16.

With his purebred looks and pleased-to-meet-ya style, I won’t be surprised if The Dude is adopted before my next shelter shift. For his sake, I hope that’s the case. And for my sake, I hope the spirit of his outlook lingers.

WHY must somebody always nitpick about totally irrelevant things? Don't know about anybody else but I'm always using "cutesy" words with my dogs. ANYWAY, so glad The Dude has a wonderful new home. Sharpei are awesome dogs!! I've had two and they are just wonderful!!!

LaPouka

Noneyah, "scritch" is a valid term, used affectionately by dog-lovers. The term scritch, also known as scritchies, skritch, or skritches, is given to the act of gently scratching a pet's back, neck or between the ears in an affectionate manner using one's fingernails (or more lightly with fingertips. On a more relevant note, congratulations on The Dude's adoption!

what's a scritch? seems to me if you're going to write an article you should know how to spell first - dogs are SCRATCHED - not scritched.

KydennDudes Mom

Hello from The Dude's new mom! I just wanted to let you all know that The Dude is doing great here in his new home. He loves our long daily walks in the woods around our home, and sleeps faithfully by my 7 year old's bed every night. We are so proud to have him as the newest member of our family!!!

  • Is safe/not living with a dog while I am pregnant?

Is it safe to live with a dog while I am pregnant? As far as I know that prenatal development is very important. Everything can be a teratogen. Teratogens are substances that can harm my baby for instance dogs' hair. I have a story that is a true story. My doctor had two grandchildren who were deaf since they were born. He was trying so hard to heal his grandchildren, but unfortunetly, they could not be healed. He went to Singapore to check them up, and doctors in there told him that the cause was toxoplasma. My doctor's daughter used to have a lot of dogs inside her house. What do you think about this story? I want to know more about that because everthing has a possibility that we never know. I don't want to conduct an experiment with my own baby. That's why I am so curios. Thank you readers.

I worked at a vet clinic for sometime. We sold the veterinary level foods from several different brands. The kinds pets need when they have extreme food allergies or diabetic or renal care. This food is on the higher end of pet food price range. About twice as much as grocery grade foods. But still we regularly have people come in buying the best for their furry babies. One time, a man came in to pick up the renal food for "his wife's" cat. I think for the case of canned cat food the total was $24. He jokingly scoffs at the cost and hands me a credit card. Then he says, "I can't believe I'm spending this much on cat food. I never used to be a cat person. I didn't get them. I was a dog person. I understand dogs, they show you exactly what they're feeling and thinking. Who would want an animal that doesn't run up to you when you get home? But now that we've had these two cats, I get it. It's a different kind of love. It just took having them to understand it." I haven't worked at that clinic for a few years now but moments like that are still crisp and vivid in my mind. It sounds like a similar transition for your dad. Maybe it started as a quest for companionship but turned out to be such a close camaraderie. Congratulations to him on his newfound love and hopefully this will be a new point of connection for the two of you.

  • I wrote a song to help end animal abuse and raise money for non-profit groups

I am an animal lover and musician. I wanted to find a way I could help animals and shelters, rescue groups, etc. So I wrote and recorded the song "It's Gotta Stop: The Animal Abuse Song". My goal is to have any animal related non-profit groups use the song to raise funds. My idea is to let them upload it as an MP3 or wave file where they could put it on their websites and let people download the song for a donation. Any thoughts? You can listen to the song at www.soundcloud.com/dogmom

  • Location to train trainers in Northern California

Does anybody know of a school in the Northern California area that trains people to train dogs? I have experience in training Police Dogs, but I would like to go through a school and get a certificate. Thanks, Barry
