UK Dog Sleeps Through 40th & Final Blood Donation Session

A dog recently donated blood for his 40th and final time in the United Kingdom and slept through the entire session. As he reaches the age of eight, the canine will now be retired as a potential donor. The easy-going dog’s donation has helped hundreds of pups, with him sleeping through most of his blood donation sessions.

A dog recently donated blood for the final time and was so relaxed that he fell asleep during the session. The canine named Sharwood is the very first to have made 40 blood donations to Pet Blood Bank U.K. He is a Gordon Setter about to hit the age of eight, which is when the charity retires its blood donors.

Sharwood’s owner, Sue Mitchell, was happy her pup could reach this impressive milestone, keeping calm as he usually does. Moreover, everyone agrees that he has a relaxed personality. The dog was also sleeping and snoring during his first blood donation session. Mitchell told BBC that the canine was accustomed to being handled as he used to participate in shows. Thanks to his history as a show dog, he has patiently sat through numerous grooming sessions.

Pet Blood Bank U.K. was founded in 2007. The charity has a permit to collect and store blood, which is processed before storage. Before blood donation, canines must undergo a health check-up, giving away 15 fluid oz each session.

Pups receive a mix of positive reinforcement, treats, and cuddles, which is why many of them enter the facility excited to receive some extra love. In addition to being healthy, dogs must weigh at least 55 lb and be between one and eight years old. Moreover, Pet Blood Bank U.K. lists having a confident personality as a requirement for being a blood donor.

Sharwood has saved a total of 160 dogs with his donated blood. For the impressive feat of completing 40 blood donation sessions, he received an engraved gold medal.
