If you enjoy stories of interspecies animal friendships, have we got a tale for you! A Saint Bernard mix and a cow have become best friends at an animal sanctuary in Virginia.

Saint Bernard and Cow Bond

The unlikely alliance formed five years ago after Susan Klingenberg returned home from a livestock auction with a newborn calf named Bucket. The baby cow laid down on a bed belonging to Klingenberg’s 4-year-old dog, Colton. The calf fell asleep instantly.

“He’s just like, ‘This looks comfortable,’ ” Klingenberg told People.

The next day, Colton and Bucket frolicked outside, playing almost as if they were both canines. They also snuggled together.

“It was so cute, like two peas in a pod,” Klingenberg said.

Klingenberg, who is the founder of Little Buckets Farm Sanctuary in Brodnax, Virginia, started posting adorable videos of the two animal pals on her @littlebucketsfarmsanctuary Instagram account, and fans came flocking.

An Enduring Friendship

Bucket is no longer a little guy – he’s since grown to a hefty 1,200 pounds and now towers above Colton. But he and Colton are still best buds; Bucket simply kneels down to get closer to Colton. They still play, snuggle, and even groom each other.

Klingenberg calls Bucket a “grass puppy” because he answers her call and seems to have the personality of a pup.

As for Bucket’s unique relationship with his Saint Bernard buddy, the dog/cow mom told People, “They truly love each other. It’s special to witness. It really has been a beautiful friendship.”

This isn’t the first interspecies friendship we’ve covered here at DogTime. Check out this story about a magpie and a dog who became BFFs — and went on to become Instagram famous because of it!
