Confirmed: Michael Vick has a dog, issues statement

Michael Vick is once again a dog owner.

Last night, Michael Vick released an official statement, confirming nearly a week of media speculation: He has a dog.

“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet. As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.”

I strongly support Vick’s desire to break the cycle. I believe that the rest of his life should be devoted to that work. But I also feel this effort can and should be made without bringing an animal into his home.

Aside from “he’s served his time,” the most prevalent defense given for Vick's dog ownership is his children. Why should they pay for their father’s transgressions? Don’t they deserve the experience of growing up with a family pet?

Vick’s children deserve love, attention, food, clothing, shelter. But saying they deserve a dog is a little like saying they deserve a private-school education or the opportunity to travel the world or a giant jungle gym in the backyard. These are privileges. Some kids have them, some don’t. In the real world, outside of professional football, want does not equal get. There are all sorts of reasons a child may grow up without a pet in the home. Because your dad had a long history of torturing animals would seem to be among the most logical.

Several years ago, Vick actually commented directly on raising a family without a dog. “That’s the hardest thing,” he said. “Telling [my daughters] that we can’t have one because of my actions.” But that’s just it — the very thing you need to be telling them! Some actions have consequences that cannot be undone.

If Michael Vick wants to instill in his children a lifelong respect and compassion for animals, he should encourage them to volunteer at their local shelter. He should talk to them about his own actions, how ashamed of them he is, and read to them about heroes like Michael Mountain and Naoto Matsumura.

Several DogTime readers disagree, posting passionate comments in favor of Vick’s dog ownership. Danielle said:

“Yall gotta let this man live. He paid his debt and since has not participated in any dog fighting activities. His WHOLE family supposed to be punished after the fact?! He has children who im sure want a dog, and they shouldnt be allowed one because of his mistakes?! come on now.”

The Michael-Vick-as-victim approach just doesn’t work for me. Let this man live? Who lives better than Vick? If you prove you have an incredibly violent, sadistic aspect to your personality that manifested over many years and in various forms, you have forfeited your right to have animals. If anything, our animal cruelty laws in this country are too lenient and unenforced. Crimes of his magnitude should carry the heaviest punishment with the least chance for leniency, not cries for second chances.

I’m wondering if Danielle and other Vick defenders would be as quick to support Patrick the Miracle Dog’s former owner. Or Larry Lowery, who threw two dogs into a fire pit. Or Ricky Lee Knowles, who tied his neighbor’s dog to a pole and attacked him with a hatchet. In Vick's case, no debt was paid (time served) for animal cruelty, no counseling underwent. Where did his epiphany occur? Hard to believe there's been any real comprehension or remorse, especially considering his remarks asking what he “ever did to anyone.”

This is bigger than one football player, one sick man’s heinous actions. This is about our society’s attitude towards animal cruelty and about sending the message that we do not tolerate it. A few short speaking engagements to cheering crowds does not show growth or commitment to animal welfare. You want a dog, Mr. Vick? Prove with your actions that you’ve earned it, not statements issued via the best PR firm money can buy.

	Would all these Vick supporters be so forgiving to a person who had been convicted of sadistic abuse towards children? If a man who had routinely beaten, or killed the children in his care got out of jail, and, upon rejoining society, said he was sorry and "wanted to be an instrument of positive change" by raising another child in his/her home, would these same Vick supporters rally around this person and say "he's done his time" or "Yall gotta let this man live"? Hell no! They'd be shouting from the rooftops that this man should never be allowed to be responsible for the life of a child again. Why should Michael Vick be treated any differently? A dog is every bit as helpless and dependent as a toddler. The point is that people who commit such cruel atrocities toward helpless beings, be they animal or human, suffer from a sick, twisted lack of empathy, compassion, and conscience. Such things cannot be learned. People who perpetrate sadistic cruelty on animals or human are missing key mental and emotional elements in their genetic makeup. You can't make someone feel something when they lack the very ability to do so. Serial killers like Jeffrey Dahmer cannot be taught to value human life anymore than a serial animal abuser/murderer like Michael Vick can be taught to value animal life. 5 months ago by Minxie76

	Yall are being rude~ Yes~ He had animal abuse done to his dogs~ Maybe his time in Jail changed him!!! Sometimes you gota give a guy the bennifet of doubt. His dog should have monthly/weekly check ups to make sure his dog is still happy. Yet why would his poor children have to go without owning a dog?! I was a child like that not long ago~ And I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted a dog for 9 years before I got one. 	THERE SHOULD BE a national animal abuse registry just as there is for child molesters and sex offenders. and there should be a lifetime ban on these monsters being around their class of victims. Child molesters should NEVER have access to children, sex offenders should have to disclose to potential dates/mates of their "status", and animal abusers should not be around or allowed control or possession of animals. period. as for Vick's sincerity, I question it. If he (and his sponsors such as Nike) were TRULY remorseful and concerned with animal s welfare, then they would (yes, Vick and Nike anbd all his other sponsors) dontate ALL (not a tiny percentage) of the profits from Vicks ebndorsements to animal welfare groups. They havent even said they are donating a portion of said profits. I would be sa tisfied if the companies donated a de4cent portion of said profits, but Vick who is rolling in money already and is the one who did these unspeakabler atrocities against animals, should voluntarily donate ALL his ebdoresment profits to these animal causes. were he to do that, I'd have at least been open to the possibility that he is truly repentant. what are the chances he will step up and (as Nike says) "JUST DO IT", and by "it", I mean "DO THE RIGHT THING" AS SPIKE LEE PUT IT. Willamette Animal Rescue previously NW Animal Rescue Alliance- BUYER BEWARE
This organization “Willamette Animal Rescue” is NOT a foster based program as her adoption website portrays. There are only a few fosterers’ mainly consisting of family/friends. There is a facility with 150+ sick, starving, dehydrated, and wounded animals. You can conclude that these helpless beings are clearly neglected! She (Alicia Inglish) has previously operated Northwest Animal Rescue Alliance, as well as having many aliases. This all can be found just by googling around. WE NEED TO COME TOGETHER AND HELP THESE ANIMALS FROM THESE MONEY HUNGRY PEOPLE. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THESE POOR AND UNHEALTHY LITTLE BEINGS! THIS IS A VERY UNORGANIZED so called "NON-PROFIT" BUSINESS. IF THIS WASN'T TRUE WHY ISN'T SHE ALLOWED TO GET ANY ANIMALS FROM (WILLAMETTE HUMANE SOCIETY or MARION COUNTY DOG SHELTER/DOG CONTROL)? WHY WON'T SHE ALLOW ANYONE IN ON THE INSIDE? WHY IS THERE NO PHYSICAL ADDRESS ANYWHERE FOR THIS SO CALLED RESCUE GROUP? I am one of her many ex-volunteers, who is trying to bring this to closure, (as I heard from a Marion County Worker). I blindly came into this situation assuming these helpless beings were rescued by a good heart. This is far from the truth! Her intentions are to only benefit herself! The physical address of this so called foster based organization is: 8955 Pueblo Ave. NE Brooks, OR. 97305 (Above the main door, there is a blue awning that says Softball Oregon. It is the second building to your right. It is across from Chemeketa Brooks Facility). There is a travel trailer on the backside of this building where she hoards more animals. There is also a white van in front of the building where she stores the hazardous waste material, being she can't even afford appropriate garbage service. Due to her unhealthy disposal of waste, the animals are at great risk for further disease. Of course this makes their habitats very unhealthy and is NOT proper care. She continuously struggles to come up with her $4000.00 rent fee for the building each month. Unless there is food donated (which very rarely happens), the animals go hungry. Just by standing on the outside of this facility you can smell how unsanitary the inside is. Upon volunteering I became very tight chested, which caused an asthma attack. It smelt of strongly concentrated urine due to dehydration and feces. Their feces as well as their urine contain blood. Every single animal in this facility has diarrhea. Make sure you contact Oregon Humane Society, ASPCA, local news, local police, local shelters, Better Business Bureau, town commissioner, and city mayor with all your situations. This woman finds/collects these animals all the way down to CA and up into WA. Being she can’t have animals from the local Salem shelters, make sure our voices are heard at all Northwest shelters. Warn everyone you know!

Is safe/not living with a dog while I am pregnant?
Is it safe to live with a dog while I am pregnant? As far as I know that prenatal development is very important. Everything can be a teratogen. Teratogens are substances that can harm my baby for instance dogs' hair. I have a story that is a true story. My doctor had two grandchildren who were deaf since they were born. He was trying so hard to heal his grandchildren, but unfortunetly, they could not be healed. He went to Singapore to check them up, and doctors in there told him that the cause was toxoplasma. My doctor's daughter used to have a lot of dogs inside her house. What do you think about this story? I want to know more about that because everthing has a possibility that we never know. I don't want to conduct an experiment with my own baby. That's why I am so curios. Thank you readers.

I worked at a vet clinic for sometime. We sold the veterinary level foods from several different brands. The kinds pets need when they have extreme food allergies or diabetic or renal care. This food is on the higher end of pet food price range. About twice as much as grocery grade foods. But still we regularly have people come in buying the best for their furry babies. One time, a man came in to pick up the renal food for "his wife's" cat. I think for the case of canned cat food the total was $24. He jokingly scoffs at the cost and hands me a credit card. Then he says, "I can't believe I'm spending this much on cat food. I never used to be a cat person. I didn't get them. I was a dog person. I understand dogs, they show you exactly what they're feeling and thinking. Who would want an animal that doesn't run up to you when you get home? But now that we've had these two cats, I get it. It's a different kind of love. It just took having them to understand it." I haven't worked at that clinic for a few years now but moments like that are still crisp and vivid in my mind. It sounds like a similar transition for your dad. Maybe it started as a quest for companionship but turned out to be such a close camaraderie. Congratulations to him on his newfound love and hopefully this will be a new point of connection for the two of you.
