Trevor Donovan Warns of Xylitol Risks After Nearly Losing Dog

Trevor Donovan has warned dog parents to keep their pups away from Xylitol after his dog, Roscoe, had a near-death experience. The 41-year-old actor has poured his heart into a recently shared Facebook post dated September 4.

Donovan reveals how he almost lost his beloved companion after he chewed and consumed a pack of gum. Xylitol is a sugar substitute and is prevalent in gum, mouthwash, cough syrup, etc. Unfortunately, the substance is poisonous to canines and can even cost their life.

Trevor Donovan opens up about his dog’s near-fatal encounter with gum

Trevor Donovan rescued Roscoe not too long ago, and the two have grown extremely fond of each other. According to him, Roscoe spent the first few months of his life in a vehicle, and naturally, he is comfortable with them. He always cozies up in Donovan’s truck and accompanies his owner when he hits the gym. To be extra careful, Donovan also keeps an eye on him while working out.

On this fateful day, Donovan returned to his vehicle to find that Roscoe had gotten his paws on a sealed pack of gum and emptied it. He seemed fine at first, but to Donovan’s horror, he soon started having a seizure. Donovan frantically looked for the nearest vet clinic, and they gave him medication to induce vomiting. However, the nightmare was far from over. The vets revealed that the experience could be fatal for Roscoe if his liver condition did not improve.

Trevor mentions in his post that he spent the next few days in agony and guilt as he could blame no one but himself for such a careless mistake. Nevertheless, after about three days, Roscoe finally overcame his critical state and reunited with his loving owner.

Donovan advises his fellow pet parents to be extra careful and promises to follow the same rule himself. Furthermore, he could not stop praising his little warrior, who took the whole experience sportingly despite being scared.
