The Jack Russell Terrier won for his role as “The Dog” in the silent-era throwback film, The Artist. Uggie’s owner, Omar Von Muller, accepted the award. Uggie, who suffers from a mysterious illness that causes him to shake uncontrollably, will retire from movie-making later this year. His brother, Dash, will replace him for future projects.

Other winners included the Pomeranian Giggy of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, who tied with Pit Bull Hercules of Pit Boss; and French Bulldog Brigitte, who plays Stella on Modern Family. Golden Collar Humanitarian Award winner Charlize Theron (whose four-legged Pomeranian co-star Hummer from Young Adult was a Golden Collar nominee) did not attend the event.

Director Martin Scorsese, who wrote about Doberman star Blackie’s award snub for the film Hugo in the Los Angeles Times, appeared at the ceremony via video. Scorsese’s editorial prompted a response from actor Antonio Banderas regarding Puss, the animated cat character Banderas voiced in the animated feature Puss in Boots.

The awards were presented at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel. Click for the full list of first annual Golden Collar Award nominee and winners.
