May 1 marks the start of National Pet Month, an annual month-long celebration of the furry, feathery, and scaly creatures pet owners make a part of their families.
National Pet Month aims to promote pet adoptions, raise awareness about responsible pet ownership, and promote the many health and personal benefits of pet ownership — for both people and the pets they love.
That makes May the perfect month to give your pets the royal treatment. Just in time for National Pet Month, online retail giant Amazon released its list of Most Pampered Pet Cities in the U.S. The rankings were compiled using Amazon.com pet item sales data from 2013 from cities with more than 400,000 residents.
The list, unveiled Tuesday, reveals that south Floridians have a soft spot for their four-legged friends. Miami takes the top spot as the city with the most pampered pets. Miamians apparently spent the most dough on pet products like clothing, grooming items, pet accessories, and health supplies.
And Seattle might be known for its rain and its coffee chains, but this Pacific Northwest city is really all about its pets, coming in a close second on Amazon’s list. The second place pampered pets city took silver for purchasing the most pet treats for dogs, cats, birds, and critters.
Not to be outdone, horse lovers in five cities, including San Jose, Calif., Colorado Springs, Long Beach, Nashville, and Omaha purchased the most products for their equine friends in 2013. Three of those cities cracked the top 20 overall for cities who love to pamper their pets.
“We love our four-legged friends at Amazon — hundreds of dogs walk the halls every day in our Seattle headquarters — and we’re excited to see who else around the country pampers their pets,” says Category Leader of Amazon Pets, Kristiana Helmick. “From Miami to Seattle, it’s clear that there are pet lovers coast-to-coast, and this list gives a bit of insight into where some of the most devoted pet owners (and most fortunate pets) call home.”
