A carefree day trip to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park turned into a tense stand off with gorillas for an inquisitive Shepherd pup.
After the unnamed dog decided to venture into the gorilla enclosure, frantic onlookers tried to usher the pooch to safety. At one point, it looked like the gorillas chased the dog around the enclosure.
Thankfully, zoo staff acted quickly to remove the gorillas from the near vicinity before contacting the San Diego Humane Society for help in securing the dog.
Footage of the pup’s escapade has naturally made its way to the social media circuit, including a video showing both the dog and the gorillas that has been shared on TikTok.
Mighty Joe Young, Safe & Sound
On Sunday, San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Officers responded to the @sdzsafaripark after a dog had gotten in to the gorilla enclosure. As soon as zoo staff saw the dog, they moved the gorillas out and our Humane Officers were able to safely move in and get the shepherd. pic.twitter.com/d7uVB6yF3o

An update posted on the San Diego Humane Society’s Twitter account relays more information:
“The dog is a male shepherd, with no microchip. He has been placed on stray hold at our Escondido Campus, as we search for his owner. Animal Caregivers have given the dog a shelter name of Mighty Joe Young. We are so glad no one was hurt.”
Humane Officer Brandt, who was part of the rescue at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, is checking on the shepherd this morning. He is doing well. We are hoping his owner will come forward to our Escondido Campus. For now, we are calling him Mighty Joe Young. pic.twitter.com/cDnCQpuUZR

Mighty Joe Young went on to get a veterinary checkup. Vets removed a few ticks, then gave him some flea medication and vaccinations.

At this time, the San Diego Humane Society hasn’t found the pooch’s humans yet. But at least he has a gorilla-free place to rest and recover from the ordeal.
Thanks To Humane & Animal Control Officers
(Picture Credit: Santi Visalli/Getty Images)While the search for Mighty Joe Young’s humans continues, the case is a good time to show a little appreciation to some of the tasks that Humane and Animal Control officers regularly carry out.
Along with occasionally stepping up to rescue dogs from gorillas, some of their most common duties include:
- Rescuing pups when senior citizens are sadly no longer able to care for them
- Dealing with situations involving dogs biting humans
- Taking up the hunt for lost and stray animals
- Looking into reports of animal cruelty and abuse
- Stepping up and attempting to put an end to dog fighting rings
So make sure to thank Humane Officer Brandt, who helped save Mighty Joe Young from gorillas, and all the other officers who do so much for dogs and our communities.
