A few seconds of attention are enough to bring out Baby’s biggest smile. And it’s this reaction that makes the reason he ended up at the shelter even harder to understand. The 4-year-old Beagle is sitting behind his kennel bars when a human stops by, and his tail starts wagging almost immediately. He looks a little unsure at first, but that doesn’t stop him from leaning into the attention and showing off that sweet, toothy grin. The visit, shared by @thepoochproject, leaves behind a difficult question: how does a dog who seems so happy to see someone end up waiting for his next chance at adoption?
Human visits shelter dog clearly excited to see them and wonders why he was surrendered
The video shows Baby sitting in his kennel, watching the person on the other side of the mesh. There is a hint of uncertainty in his expression, too, but he does not pull away. In fact, he seems happy to have someone there. You can tell by his wagging tail. A closer shot shows Baby sitting with the sweetest toothy grin while continuing to wag his body. The text on the video adds a painful detail: his last car ride with his person ended at the shelter.
According to the caption, Baby was surrendered to Downey Animal Care Center on August 11 because of owner problems. He is neutered, weighs 24 pounds, and was listed as available for public adoption. The shelter notes that he cannot live with cats because he allegedly tries to attack them. So, any future home would need to take that into consideration.
Still, watching this shelter dog sweetly greet a human during the visit is so heartwarming. It makes it easy to see why people in the comments were rooting hard for him. One viewer wrote that Baby “just wants a forever loving family and home,” while another couldn’t get over his smile.
The post received more than 12,700 likes, with people sharing and boosting Baby’s adoption appeal in hopes that the right person would see him. And there is finally some good news. The latest update says Baby has a rescue pickup pending, meaning his shelter stay may be coming to an end soon. That does not erase the question of why he was surrendered, but it does give his story a much happier next chapter to look forward to.
