In a busy shelter, even the sweetest dogs can disappear into the background, especially when they’re scared. That’s exactly what happens to Hunter, an 81-pound shelter dog featured in a recent Instagram video shared by @carsonshelterpups. The four-year-old spends most of his time tucked into the back of his kennel, where he seems to feel a little safer. Volunteers explain that the shelter is so full right now that shy dogs like Hunter simply don’t get as much time. Even so, volunteers haven’t stopped trying to find someone willing to give Hunter the patience he needs before time runs out.
Shelter dog ‘shut down’ due to fear looks to be adopted urgently
Hunter is first seen curled up in the corner of his kennel, keeping as much to himself as possible. In another shot, he completely refuses to move into the front viewing area, making it impossible for passing families to notice him. One volunteer offers him treats, but Hunter just watches for a while before even thinking about moving closer.
Even outdoors, he looks unsure, padding around with his tail tucked close behind him. The captions explain that the yard feels just as overwhelming to him as the kennel. Then something small but encouraging happens. Around one volunteer he already knows, Hunter starts to relax. He finally works up the courage to take a treat from the volunteer’s knee. He even gives a tiny tail wag and happily accepts a few gentle head scratches.
Like many Shepherd mixes, Hunter seems very tuned in to everything happening around him, though it’s clear he still wants gentle human company. He also spends time with other calm dogs during playgroup, which is an encouraging sign.
In less than a day, the video picked up more than 1,700 likes from people hoping the sweet shelter dog finally catches a break. One volunteer shared that Hunter often takes a few steps forward, only to lose confidence and back away again. They added that he desperately needs a patient household to help him slowly re-learn how to trust. One experienced foster pointed out that some fearful dogs start relaxing surprisingly quickly after leaving the shelter.
