Every rescue has a beginning, and Pongo’s started with an unexpected detour. While on her way to the beach, Rachel learned about a stray dog struggling in 101-degree heat and decided she couldn’t ignore the call for help. A touching Instagram video now celebrates the second anniversary of the day Pongo found not only safety, but his forever mom.

Instagram user @rachelishaa recently shared a video marking her dog Pongo’s second “Gotcha Day.” In the clip, she takes viewers back to the day their paths first crossed before showing the happy life they now share together.
The video opens with Rachel reflecting on what happened two years earlier. She explains that she and her group had been on their way to the beach. That’s when they received news that a Dalmatian needed to be rescued. While many people understandably stayed indoors because temperatures had reached 101 degrees, Rachel decided she couldn’t ignore the call for help. “Happy Second Gotcha Day Pongo,” she says at the beginning of the clip, before adding that she hopes they get to celebrate many more gotcha days together.
The reel then flashes back to June 28, 2024. Filming from inside her car, Rachel tells viewers just how hot the weather was that day. Meanwhile, she explains that the Dalmatian had been roaming the streets alone and was in poor condition. She says walking away simply wasn’t an option. So, instead of continuing to the beach, she stopped to rescue the dog.
That decision would change both of their lives. Soon after, the video returns to the present on June 28, 2026. Rachel is once again in the car, but this time Pongo is happily riding in the back seat.
What’s more, she also commemorated the occasion by wearing a white T-shirt printed with Pongo’s face. The celebration continued with a beach trip, bringing the story full circle. Instead of being the destination they never reached on rescue day, the beach became the setting where Rachel and Pongo celebrated two years together.
Rachel summed up the emotional journey in the caption. “Two years ago a Dalmatian needed to be rescued and the rest was history and destiny,” she wrote.
