Senior Shelter Dog Doesn’t Want the Kennel to Be Her Whole World

Margot knows what it’s like to lose a home, find comfort again, and then lose it once more. After spending time thriving in foster care, the senior dog has returned to the shelter, where staff worry her kennel has become her entire world. A heartfelt video from Orange County Animal Services is now introducing her to the people they hope will become her forever family.

Senior shelter dog once abandoned now looks to be adopted

Orange County Animal Services is hoping a heartfelt Instagram post will help Margot finally find the permanent home she has been waiting for. The video introduces viewers to the senior pup with a simple but powerful message. “The world gave this senior dog a second chance in the spring & then kept walking past her kennel,” the text reads. It then explains that animal services officers rescued the abandoned senior from a field.

Shelter staff estimates Margot is between 10 and 12 years old. When they first found her, she had “curled up into a ball” in the middle of a field. According to the shelter’s caption, she was starving and so overwhelmed that she initially growled when someone approached.

No one knows exactly how Margot ended up there, but staff believes she once had a family. Her nails were neatly trimmed, her coat was clean, and there were marks around her neck suggesting she had previously been tied out. Despite those signs, she was alone with little chance of surviving on her own.

Her arrival at the shelter marked the beginning of a slow recovery. Frightened and unsure of people, Margot kept her distance and was reluctant to let anyone get close. While she appeared comfortable around other dogs, she remained guarded with humans, as though she was still trying to make sense of everything that had happened.

Over nearly three months, that began to change. With time and patience, Margot slowly started trusting the people caring for her. One of the biggest turning points came when Margot entered a foster home. Away from the shelter environment, she blossomed. She played, relaxed, and experienced the comfort of living in a home again.

Unfortunately, the foster placement was only temporary, and Margot eventually had to return to the kennel. The video continues by acknowledging the emotional toll of returning to shelter life. “She doesn’t understand why the warmth disappeared. She just knows she’s alone again,” the text overlay reads.

While the kennel has become her entire world for now, staff hope sharing her story will help someone see beyond the gray on her muzzle and offer her the lasting home she has spent so long waiting for.
