Shelter Dog Creates Own Little World Inside Tiny Kennel, Playing With a Toy All by Himself

Dogs do not need much to make the most of a moment. A favorite toy and some space can be enough to turn an ordinary afternoon into their own kind of fun. That was exactly the scene one Maui Humane Society volunteer came across when she heard a squeaky toy coming from a kennel and found a young shelter dog completely immersed in play.

Shelter dog left behind not long ago doesn’t let a tiny kennel restrict his love for a toy

The Instagram reel was posted by Cassondra, who volunteers at the Maui Humane Society and shares updates on Instagram via @cassondra.christman. According to the text included in the clip, she was on her way out of the shelter when she heard an unexpected squeaking sound coming from one of the kennels.

When she turned to look, she found Kekoa, a 2-year-old shelter dog, entertaining himself with a toy. While the other dogs around him were asleep, Kekoa appeared completely absorbed in his own game. He is captured, tossing and squeaking the toy as if the small kennel around him did not matter at all. Cassondra wrote that he was “having the time of his life,” and the video shows exactly that kind of carefree energy.

Onscreen text further explained that Kekoa was first left outside the shelter in a crate as a puppy two years ago. He later found a home, but was recently returned after his family lost their housing. Now, the little dog is back at Maui Humane Society and waiting once again for someone to adopt him.

In the caption, Cassondra shared more about his personality and what kind of home he may need. She described Kekoa as “friendly,” toy-loving, and “good with other dogs so far.” She also said he is a “smart” dog who already knows commands like “sit” and “paw.”

Because he is still very young, Cassondra noted that Kekoa likely has some “silly puppy behaviors” and would benefit from positive reinforcement training. That said, she also made it clear that he is “ready and eager to learn.”
