Golden Retriever Surrendered for Being ‘Too Much’ Finds a Rightful Home

As a recent video shows, Maple may be a happy and confident Golden Retriever today, but her life looked very different when she was a puppy. Like many dogs that are surrendered by their owners, she needed someone willing to look beyond her challenges and see her potential. Sometimes, what one family views as “too much” is simply a pet that hasn’t yet found the right home. A video shared by @thegoldenbreakfastclub recently revealed how Maple went from being given up to becoming a beloved member of a family that couldn’t imagine life without her.

According to her owners, Maple was just six months old when they welcomed her into their family after she was abandoned. Early footage included in the video helps explain why the young dog may have been considered difficult to manage. Maple can be seen dashing around the house with boundless energy, seemingly unable to contain her excitement. But as her new family soon learned, there was more behind her behavior than simple hyperactivity.

Through onscreen text, the owners reveal that Maple had spent much of her early life confined to a crate. They said she arrived with little training and had not learned basic commands. The video further explains that Maple had originally been purchased from a pet store as a Christmas gift.

Her owners later learned that the pet store had sourced her from a puppy mill. To provide more context about her beginnings, the clip includes a photograph of Maple as a puppy. Adjusting to a new environment was not easy for the young Golden Retriever. Her owners describe her as having both significant energy and considerable anxiety. One scene shows Maple barking fearfully at a television, illustrating how unfamiliar situations could easily overwhelm her.

That said, her new family focused on helping her build confidence one step at a time. The video shows Maple learning commands and being rewarded with praise as she gradually gained trust in both her surroundings and the people around her.

Maple also found an unexpected companion in Waffles, the family’s cat. While Maple appeared eager to befriend her new housemate, the owners joked that Waffles was less enthusiastic about sharing his space with an energetic puppy. Over time, however, the two became an inseparable part of the household. Now, Maple and Waffles have a growing Instagram audience of over half a million followers.

As for Maple, what began as a difficult start ultimately led her to the family that was willing to invest the time and care she needed. Five years later, the dog once labeled “too much” has become exactly what her new family was looking for.
