Two Golden Retrievers Went for a Walk, Came Back as Chocolate Labs

A walk in the woods sounds like a peaceful way to spend the day until your dog spots mud. Then it becomes a race between your hopes of keeping them clean and their determination to do the exact opposite.

More often than not, the dogs win. That’s precisely what happened in a video featuring two Golden Retrievers, whose muddy adventure left their owner joking that she came home with “two Chocolate Labs.”

Two Golden Retrievers rolled in the mud during their walk in the woods

The video, posted by @threegoldiesonepyr, shows three Golden Retrievers as they explore a wooded trail with their owner while on a walk. Things take a turn when the trio comes across a muddy puddle along the path.

While one of the dogs decides to stay relatively clean, the other two immediately seize the opportunity for some fun. They begin rolling enthusiastically in the mud, rubbing their bodies into the wet dirt and showing little concern for how they might look afterward.

By the time they finish, their golden coats are almost entirely hidden beneath a thick layer of mud. The transformation is so dramatic that the owner added a humorous text overlay to the video that read, “Went into the woods with three Golden Retrievers, left with one Golden and two Chocolate Labs.”

The contrast between the dogs makes the moment even funnier. As the two muddy Retrievers continue enjoying themselves, the third pup watches the scene unfold with mild concern. The cleaner pup appears noticeably more reserved, standing at a distance as if unsure what to make of her siblings’ questionable behavior.

While the scene may leave some owners cringing at the thought of bath time, the dogs clearly had the time of their lives. Rolling in mud is a common behavior among canines, and there are several reasons they find it so appealing. Mud can help cool them down on warm days, offering relief from the heat, much like a splash in a pond.

Some experts also believe dogs are drawn to strong scents and may roll in mud or dirt to mask their own smell. Others think they simply enjoy the texture and sensory stimulation. Unfortunately, that enjoyment usually comes with one unavoidable consequence: bath time.
