Bringing a brand-new pet into a house with a reactive dog sounds like a recipe for disaster. But the dedicated owners behind the popular Instagram account @goldenboycustard decided to take that leap of faith anyway. They just introduced their anxious rescue Golden Retriever, Custard, to an adorable little puppy named Moose. Custard, originally from Romania, developed intense leash reactivity after moving to the UK, which made his parents pretty nervous about expanding the family. But after months of research and training, they’ve welcomed a Basset Hound puppy, and now everyone is watching their beautiful journey unfold.
Rescue Golden Retriever’s first meeting with little puppy is every bit magical as expected
The viral video shows day one of the big introduction. It starts with Moose sleeping peacefully on a lap in the car during the ride home. Once they get back, mom holds the tiny baby in the backyard while dad lets Custard out. The big guy carries that classic, eager retriever friendliness. So he immediately trots over to wag his tail and sniff mom’s legs. But he is wearing a muzzle just to keep everyone entirely safe.
Dad immediately kneels to give him a treat through the basket, keeping the vibe positive. They eventually decide to take the muzzle off, so Custard doesn’t get frustrated. He is clearly super curious about the new addition as he keeps going back to mom to enquire more. There are a couple of low growls at first, which is totally normal. But Dad handles it perfectly by calling him back for more snacks.
This smart dog listens obediently and later sits down on command. He even lies right in the grass next to his dad. He just needed a second to realize his new sibling isn’t a threat.
The owners were initially worried about adding a second pet. Thankfully, this sweet rescue Golden Retriever is proving them wrong by doing amazing with the little puppy. Later on, the video cuts indoors to show them learning to coexist beautifully. Dad plays with Moose in one room while Custard happily chews his own toy in the next room.
Viewers are completely in love with the pair. One person commented, “Custard, you’re doing amazing!” Another fan swooned over Moose’s giant Basset Hound ears. Everyone is excited to watch this sweet relationship grow.
