Bringing a rescue pup home for the first time can be both rewarding and challenging. Many animals coming from shelters carry fear and uncertainty, making even simple interactions feel overwhelming. As such, building trust in those early hours requires patience, consistency, and small, thoughtful steps. A touching video shared on Instagram shows how one nervous rescue dog slowly began to trust his new dad on the very first day.
Dad uses treats to teach rescue dog about trust on first day at home from shelter
The clip, posted by Mike Brown on @cactustherescue, looks back at the early days of his rescue dog, Cactus. When Brown first brought the puppy home from a shelter two years ago, Cactus was extremely timid and unsure of his surroundings. His fear was so intense that he immediately hid under a bed and refused to come out.
Rather than forcing him out, Brown chose a gentler approach. He sat nearby and began placing treats under the bed, close to where Cactus was hiding. The idea was to create a safe reason for the puppy to move forward. Over time, Brown gradually reduced the distance between treats, encouraging Cactus to inch closer to the open space.
It took time, but the method worked. Slowly, Cactus edged forward, drawn by the treats and reassured by Brown’s calm presence. When he finally stepped out from under the bed, Brown praised him softly and rewarded him with a toy. Soon after, Cactus received his first beef stick, which he held onto with visible excitement.
The day didn’t stop there. Brown took Cactus out to a nearby park, giving him a chance to experience new sights and smells. The outing included a quiet moment watching turtles, adding to what was already a big day for the young pup. By the end of it, the once-fearful dog appeared calmer.
The video closes on a softer note, showing Cactus curled up and dozing off during his first cuddle with Brown. Reflecting on that moment, Brown shared that while Cactus was still nervous, he was “starting to trust me just a little.” According to Brown, what began as a foster situation soon felt like something more permanent.
Viewers were deeply moved by the transformation. Many pointed out how far Cactus has come, with one saying his journey was heartwarming to watch. Others commented on the instant connection, suggesting the dog seemed to know Brown was “the one” for him. Some expressed happiness that Cactus found a loving “furever home.”
