Video: Golden Retriever Puppy Learns How To Open Drawers

If you’ve ever shared a home with a puppy, you know they’re always watching, learning, and quietly figuring things out. What starts as harmless curiosity can quickly turn into impressive problem-solving. It’s adorable, sure, but also slightly concerning when they succeed. One Golden Retriever puppy has now caught the attention of online viewers after a video showed her learning to open drawers all by herself.

Golden Retriever puppy unlocks a new skill in cute video

The video, shared on Instagram by @lanathegoldenretriever_, shows a Golden Retriever puppy named Lana curiously investigating a cabinet drawer. At first, Lana appears unsure of how to access what’s inside, but her persistence quickly takes over.

She begins by trying to pull the drawer open with her mouth, biting the edge and tugging. When that doesn’t quite work, she switches tactics. Using her paws, Lana repeatedly taps and pushes at the drawer front, testing different angles and movements.

After a few attempts, her paw lands on a small groove in the drawer, giving her just enough grip to pull it open. The moment the drawer slides out, Lana pauses briefly, almost as if surprised by her own success, before leaning in to inspect its contents. The entire scene is captured by her owner, who seems both amused and slightly concerned by the puppy’s new discovery.

On-screen text in the video humorously reads, “so I guess my stuff isn’t safe anywhere anymore,” while the caption adds, “pov: my puppy just learned how to open drawers, nothing is safe anymore.”

If your dog starts showing similar behavior, it’s worth understanding how it happens and what you can do about it. Dogs learn by experimenting and being rewarded, even unintentionally. If opening a drawer leads to finding something interesting, they’re likely to repeat it. To prevent unwanted habits, consider using childproof locks on drawers and cabinets, especially those within easy reach.

Keeping tempting items out of sight and providing appropriate toys can also redirect their curiosity in a safer way. At the same time, you’ll want to supervise your pup and reinforce boundaries to help maintain a balance between encouraging curiosity and protecting your space.
