Daring Chopper Rescue Saves Dog Stuck in Frigid Waters

A dramatic rescue unfolded in Central New York on Monday after a dog was spotted struggling to stay afloat in icy river waters. What began as a distress call quickly turned into a high-speed aerial response involving local law enforcement. Fortunately, within minutes, a coordinated effort brought the situation under control.

The dog was rescued within minutes of being reported by a passerby

The incident reportedly began when a passerby noticed a Goldendoodle, later identified as Cooper, paddling in the middle of the Seneca River in Baldwinsville. Concerned for the animal’s safety, the individual called 911, prompting an immediate response from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

According to officials, an Air1 helicopter unit already on patrol was dispatched and arrived at the scene in about a minute. From above, the crew allegedly spotted the dog struggling in the cold water, appearing unable to make his way to shore. Given the urgency of the situation, deputies decided to carry out what is known as a skid rescue.

Deputy Levi Taylor reportedly stepped onto the helicopter’s skid and carefully moved toward the edge while secured to the aircraft. Video from the scene appears to show the tense moments as he reached down and lifted the dog to safety. The entire operation was completed in just a few minutes.

Sgt. Jim Farley later shared that the call struck a personal chord. “We hear a dispatch put out a dog in the middle of the river struggling to stay afloat, we both look at each other and go, ‘Oh yeah, we’re going on this,’” he said, per NewsNation. He added that the situation reminded him of his own children’s pet, saying it “hit home.”

Once rescued, Cooper was taken to a nearby field where first responders were waiting with blankets. Authorities said the dog appeared extremely cold and was “shivering continuously” after being pulled from the water.

Officials later confirmed that Cooper was safely reunited with his owners and is recovering well. The sheriff’s office also praised the quick coordination between dispatchers, the flight crew, and firefighters, crediting them for the success.
