Peter the Golden Retriever has decided to sit by the pool and stare at his owner, waiting for the human to get the message. ESPN broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit posted a video of his family dog on Instagram with the playful caption, “‘Again.’ ~ Peter.” The video shows the Golden Retriever sitting at the very edge of the pool with his back straight, paws neatly clasped together, and eyes fixated on the house. Herbstreit tells the audience in the caption, “Peter sits here ALL DAY.”
Internet can’t stop loving this Golden Retriever and his majestic pose
Golden Retrievers are famous for their patience and focus. Trainers have historically bred them that way because the dogs had to wait beside hunters until they retrieved the prey from water. Besides, that unwavering stare is Peter’s way to demand attention.
Dogs learn that eye contact often precedes action in the form of treats and toys, so by relentlessly staring at his owner, Peter reduces all distractions for his owner. They either cave and toss the ball, or the Golden Retriever will spend the day judging them.
Commenters loved the theatrics of it all. One said, “He’s patient and wise,” while another joked that Peter “sits like the Royal Highness he is,” and several asked where they could buy an automatic ball launcher so the dog could finally stop staring. A Golden owner even empathized, writing, “My dog would bark at me all day about it. Goldens are the best.”
The Golden Retriever got viewers smitten in seconds, and all it took for him was to sit majestically by the pool. One viewer wrote that Peter looks “regal,” while another called him “an old soul,” and several commenters promised to “come throw the ball for him” if Herbstreit needed backup. A fan could not help but gush, “Peter is the highlight of our day.”
Until the owner gives the Golden Retriever some attention, he will look majestic, sitting by the pool, and that is a part of his charm.
