Video: Golden Retriever Reacts When Told She’s Going to Grandma’s

Uttering just one word sent Comet Olsen the Golden Retriever into a celebration in this adorable Instagram video from @peachycomet22, and the word is “Grandma.” In the clip, the Golden proves just how much one dog can love a trip to Grandma’s house. The on-screen caption teases viewers with “Watch what happens when I say it,” while the caption under the video spells it out, noting, “The word is ‘grandma.’”

Golden Retriever reacts to visiting grandma in adorable video

The video opens with the Golden Retriever sitting with her ears perked when her Mom asks, “Wanna go on a car ride?” Comet’s head tilts up as Mom keeps the conversation going with, “We’re going today,” which earns an approving groan from the dog with a playful gesture, as if to let out an excited “Yes!”

Then comes the magic line. Mom tells Comet, “You’re gonna see people you love,” prompting the Golden to rise high on her back legs, paws hanging in the air. Comet’s Mom then reveals, “Grandma.” At that, Comet throws each paw upwards, one by one, and drops them back down, as if she is giving an invisible high-five. Her head bobs and her body wiggles as she looks straight into the camera, fully approving the plan.

Dogs form close associations between sounds and the outcomes they bring. Comet has likely learned that “Grandma” leads to car rides, some extra treats, lots of cuddles, and a house that showers her with a lot of affection, a rush of feelings that is reflected in the Golden Retriever’s joyful groans and paw pumps in the video.

Comet’s viewers loved the performance. Commenters called the dog “so sweet” and “clearly excited,” while one spoke for Comet when they said, “Grandma is the best.” And judging by Comet’s proud paw gesture and the approving nod, she is ready to have some fun at Grandma’s.
