Video: Dog Won’t Sleep Until He Gets His Way

Sending your pet dog to bed can be a challenge, and this hilarious Instagram video from @thewafflesmonroe supports that premise. In the video, a Dachshund named Waffles demands belly rubs during bedtime. And if he does not get his way, he will lock eyes and let out a low, grumbly growl. If that does not tell you about a tiny dog’s big tantrums, what will?

Dog growls after the petting stops

The video shows the dog on a cozy bed while his owner wishes him a “Good night,” but it is certainly not time to sleep until he gets his deserved belly rubs. Waffles stares at his owner and growls to remind her of her duty. The on-screen text calls it “Waffles bedtime routine.” It plays out like a mini-drama series in episodes: “Waffles Demands to be pet,” otherwise “The real tantrum begins.” He “Talks back” and “Declines bedtime,” all until “he gets his way.”

At first, the owner gives him a few belly rubs, then stops. She tells him, “Go to bed,” and when he keeps “talking back,” she adds, “Waffles, don’t be sassy,” but he refuses to quit. After a few more seconds of protest, she gives in and goes right back to rubbing his belly. Mission accomplished.

Many Dachshund owners agree that this is the standard routine. One viewer was sure, writing, “1000% Doxie behavior,” while a second commenter noted the dog’s behavior, quipping, “‘Don’t be sassy’ proceeds to be sassy.” And a third was right when they observed, “Dachshund tantrums are not for the weak lol.”

Dogs learn fast, and when a not-so-scary, complaining growl leads to more attention, they will file that away as a winning strategy, especially breeds famous for being stubborn and expressive.

By the end of the video, the dog looks settled in bed again, stretched out with his little paws up, while his owner keeps rubbing his belly like she never stood a chance. Bedtime, as it turns out, happens on Waffles’ schedule, and he gets the last word.
