Video: Labrador’s Attempts to Get a Stick Through a Narrow Space End Unexpectedly

Most people would see a massive, mud-covered branch in the middle of a park and walk right past it, but Percy considers it a trophy that belongs in his living room. Over at @mylabrachildren, this dad treats his pups like actual family members, documenting every messy, real-life moment along the way. In a recent video, this ambitious Labrador finds himself in a total standoff with a narrow gap in a fence. He has found a stick roughly twice as wide as the exit, but walking away without it isn’t an option.

Labrador successfully gets a large stick through the fence in cute video

The action in the video starts with the Labrador standing at the fence line, wedging the stick firmly against the posts while his dad cheers him on from the other side. “You can do it, Percy,” he says, watching his “son” grapple with the fundamental laws of physics. Initially, the dog is totally jammed, so he takes a few steps back and drops the prize. He actually walks through the gap easily without it, only to turn right back around to retrieve his treasure.

Meanwhile, Dad wonders if pulling the branch through from a different angle might do the trick. Percy picks the wood back up and tries to squeeze through again, but it’s still sitting too high to clear the narrow space. Surprisingly, instead of giving up, he starts digging in the dirt. It really looks like he is trying to lower the ground level to create more room for his haul. He paws at the soil, repositions the branch, and stays entirely focused on the mission.

Eventually, after a bit more digging and some serious mental math, he finds the winning angle. He comes through again, grabs the wood, tilts his head just right, and pulls it through the gap. “Well done, mate,” Dad says as Percy proudly trots across the road toward the sidewalk. One viewer mentioned they could practically see the little wheels in his brain turning during the struggle. As his dad puts it, “He always gets there in the end. Clever boy Percy.” And we’ve seen him do just that in an older viral video.

More than 4000 people found this level of persistence over a piece of wood inspiring. Now that he’s successfully navigated the “narrow space,” he can finally take his prize home and relax.
