Golden Retriever Is Basically a Giant ‘Lap Dog’ in Adorable Video

Big dogs have a way of forgetting just how large they really are. Despite their size, many of them still crave the same closeness and affection they enjoyed as puppies. That instinct is on full display in a recent video that has viewers smiling as one Golden Retriever appears convinced he is, in fact, a lap dog.

Video shows Golden Retriever being a massive but adorable ‘lap dog’

Zebby may weigh around 80 pounds, but that doesn’t stop him from climbing onto his owner’s lap whenever she is lying down or relaxing. In the video, he casually settles himself across her, completely at ease, as if this is the most natural spot in the world. Text over the video reads, “You live with an 80lb lap dog,” perfectly summing up the situation.

His owner leans into the joke, affectionately squishing Zebby’s face to show just how soft and fluffy he is. Surprisingly, Zebby doesn’t protest. In fact, he seems to enjoy the attention, calmly accepting the cuddles, while pressing his full weight against her. The video captures several moments of him sprawling comfortably, seemingly unaware that he takes up most of the space.

Viewers quickly filled the comments with jokes and admiration for the oversized cuddle bug. One person humorously remarked that the video felt like it lasted ten minutes, likely because it was too cute to look away from.

Another described Zebby as “the squishiest squish to ever squish,” while someone else joked that, although breathing might be difficult under the weight of such a large dog, having a full heart makes it worth it.

Big dogs acting like lap dogs is a common phenomenon, and behavior experts say it usually comes down to comfort and bonding. Many large breeds were once small puppies who were held, cuddled, and allowed on laps.

As they grow, that sense of closeness doesn’t disappear. Dogs also associate physical contact with safety and affection, especially with owners they trust. For breeds like Golden Retrievers, which are known for their affectionate and people-focused nature, being close isn’t just preferred, it’s instinctive.
