Video: Owner Wants To Protect Dachshund’s Back but He Won’t Listen

Dog parents often go to great lengths to keep their pets safe, especially when the breed is prone to certain health issues. Dachshunds, in particular, require extra care because of their long backs and tendency toward spinal problems. Despite owners doing everything possible to limit strain and prevent injury, some dogs simply prefer to follow their own instincts. That humorous reality is on full display in a new video featuring a spirited Dachshund named Rudy.

The video opens with the text, “Things we do to protect our dachshunds back,” followed by an AI voiceover that reads the lines aloud. The pet parent then begins listing all the steps they’ve taken to keep Rudy safe. The first measure is a ramp beside the bed, intended to prevent him from jumping down and jarring his spine. Instead of using it, Rudy confidently leaps straight off the bed, completely ignoring the ramp that was placed for him.

Next, the owner shows the barriers they set up on the furniture to stop him from climbing on and off. These precautions would work for most dogs, but Rudy treats them like minor obstacles. The adorable Dachshund hops right over them, as if the barriers were never there. The pattern continues when the pet parent explains that they choose flat walking routes with no stairs, hoping to avoid extra strain on Rudy’s back. During the clip, however, Rudy is seen jumping up and down along a tree-lined sidewalk, turning the safe walking path into a small agility course.

Even mealtime becomes part of his defiance. The owner says they add healthy supplements to Rudy’s food to support his joints, but when the bowl is empty, the supplement sits untouched at the bottom. The fifth effort they describe is planning regular walks to keep him fit, yet Rudy hides under the bed when it’s time to go. They call his name, coax him, and wait him out, but Rudy remains firmly in place.

That said, the final example takes a humorous turn. Rudy’s pet parent mentions that they run with him regularly, and this, oddly enough, is the one thing he actually does. But the catch is he only starts running enthusiastically once they tell him it’s time to head home.
