Most people who have ever brought home a puppy know that “sweet and sleepy” isn’t usually their default setting. But sometimes, puppies are clever enough to fake it. Case in point: Cheddar, a Golden Retriever pup who had his new family convinced he was the chillest of the litter.
In a new Instagram video posted by @goldenboy.cheddar, viewers first see him cuddled up in his parents’ arms, looking like he belongs on a calendar for “Perfect Puppies.” The text on screen makes the joke clear: “POV: You tricked them into picking you by acting the calmest pup in the litter.” And oh, does Cheddar prove them right.

The reel has blown up online, racking up more than 26.7K likes from dog lovers who know this story all too well. Right after the “innocent” opening, the video cuts to chaos mode. Cheddar is everywhere at once — chomping toilet paper in the bathroom or play-fighting with his plushie. He’s either pulling the couch throw off the couch or showing his scissor-like teeth to his human.
He makes the phone camera topple and even tries to body-slam his own reflection in the full-length mirror. At one point, he barrels straight into the room and launches onto the couch like it’s his personal trampoline. Puppy energy is not for the faint-hearted.
What makes the reel hilarious is how perfectly it lines up with what so many puppy parents have experienced. One viewer admitted, “That was my second golden, Tucker. We even named him that because he fell asleep and my mom said ‘oh, he’s all tuckered out!’ That was his last calm moment lol.” Another joked, “Standard Golden puppy tactics. Works 100% of the time.”
