Video: Social Media Helps Shelter Dog On Euthanasia List Get Adopted

Every year, thousands of dogs enter shelters across the United States, and sadly, not all make it out. Overcrowding, limited resources, and a lack of adopters lead many shelters to make heartbreaking decisions, especially for animals who have been overlooked for weeks or months. But sometimes, all it takes is one video and a little help from social media to change a dog’s fate. One recent case out of California shows just how powerful that digital lifeline can be.

Shelter dog gets adopted within 24 hours after going viral in video

Just four days ago, a heartbreaking video was posted by volunteers at Carson Animal Shelter in Gardena, California. The dog in the video was Ms. Honey, a four-year-old Pit Bull who was listed for euthanasia. Instead of showing her behind shelter bars, volunteers took her for a day out to the beach — a final outing, they said, before her scheduled euthanasia.

In the caption, volunteers described Ms. Honey as the “sweetest, most perfect girl in the whole shelter,” calling her a “once-in-a-lifetime” kind of dog. They shared how she came in scared and timid but had since warmed up, becoming affectionate, gentle, and calm.

Ms. Honey was dog-friendly, leash-trained, and knew a few basic commands. Her weight was listed at 53 pounds, and she came in with her sister, Matilda, who was also up for adoption. “She’s the entire package wrapped up in a packet of honey,” the post read. It was obvious Ms. Honey had the potential to be someone’s perfect companion.

The video went viral within hours, and so did Ms. Honey’s story. Comments poured in, shares multiplied, and within 24 hours, Ms. Honey had four meet-and-greet appointments lined up. By the end of the day, she was adopted.

A follow-up video of her adoption shared by the shelter showed the dog walking off with her new family. In the comments, her new owner shared a heartwarming update: “She’s so calm and sweet and showering the whole family with kisses,” the comment read. “Three hour drive home and she was sleeping peacefully in my daughter’s lap. We are off to PetSmart to spoil her.”
