Most pet owners assume they’re the ones doing all the training. We say, “Sit,” “Stay,” “Leave the remote alone,” and expect our dogs to adapt to our world. However, every so often, a pup proves they’ve been watching, learning, and picking up on far more than we give them credit for. A recent video shows just how far a little canine intuition can go when a clever dog decides she’s got just the right skills to let herself back inside her home.
Dog rewarded by owner for learning to slide open the door by herself in video
Oreo, a Labrador Retriever, has gone viral over the course of a day after pulling off a smart move that caught even her owner off guard. In a clip uploaded by @oreothedogbiscuit, she can be seen standing outside a sliding glass door that has only been left open a few inches.
Her parent, filming from inside, encouraged her to come through, assuring her that the gap was wide enough to squeeze through. Oreo seemed unsure at first, pausing and peering through the opening with a confused expression.
However, instead of giving up, the dog figured out a solution, with her owner managing to capture her self-taught skill on video. She gently pressed her nose against the edge of the glass door and, to her parent’s surprise, managed to slide it open a little further.
Just like that, she created enough space to walk through. “Oh my goodness, what a clever girl. You opened the door!,” her owner exclaimed in the clip. As a reward for her quick thinking, Oreo happily demanded a treat, receiving the same.
The Labrador’s little eureka moment turned her into a mini celebrity, with commenters falling for both her cleverness and charm. One person said, “My lab is exactly like this with doors, convinced she can’t get through but eventually nudges.”
Another added, “I love the ‘I was so smart. Treat please.’ The sweetest.” Someone else imagined Oreo’s inner monologue: “I do not fit mum. Oh wait I was trained to be a guide dog so I could give it a try.” Many viewers felt the moment was relatable, noting how expressive and determined Labradors can be.
