Animal cruelty continues to be a widespread issue, with thousands of dogs facing abuse, neglect, or abandonment every year. While rescue groups and kind individuals work tirelessly to save and rehabilitate these animals, recovery — both physical and emotional — is often a slow and uncertain process. However, occasionally, a rescue becomes something much deeper when the bond between a furry friend and their savior grows into a lasting connection. One such story is captured in a moving video that follows a dog’s rescue and her eventual adoption into a loving, forever home.
Owner’s dog rescue transforms into adoption story in moving video
Niall Harbison, founder of the nonprofit Happy Doggo, has made it his mission to rescue and rehabilitate canines in need. One of his recent rescues was Chance, a dog who had been severely abused and stabbed twice in the stomach. While her physical injuries have improved after three weeks of care, Harbison says Chance still has a long way to go emotionally.
In a video posted to his Instagram account @niall.harbison, he gave an update on her condition. He shared that although her body is healing, she will still need time to feel safe again. He said that what Chance truly needs now is space and a loving home where she can fully recover. Harbison then announced that he would be adopting her himself.
Chance will join his other furry companion, Hank, and become part of a very small, special group. “For that reason, Chance will become the 5th dog ever to get a golden ticket at @wearehappydoggo,” Harbison wrote in the video’s caption.
The “Golden Ticket” is a designation given to canines who become permanent members of the Happy Doggo family. These are typically older dogs, have complex needs, or are unlikely to be rehomed elsewhere. It ensures these animals will live out the rest of their lives in a loving and secure environment.
Harbison believes Chance is exactly the kind of pup who deserves that peace. “Living with me and Hank is the ideal place for her to live out her days and grow her confidence again,” he shared.
One viewer wrote, “This is so wonderful to hear, Niall… she’s lucky you found her.” Another said, “Thank you for giving her this life. You’re amazing.” An individual also added, “Our job is to love them so hard they forget the awful lives before this.”
