Video of Dog Taking off When Leash Is Removed Goes Viral

If humans reacted to small freedoms the way dogs do, we would be cartwheeling out of the office every Friday afternoon. Dogs don’t hold back when it comes to joy, especially when the leash is removed. In one viral Instagram video, a Golden Retriever shows just how dramatic (and relatable) the thrill of “release” can be.

Dog cannot wait for leash to be removed before taking off in hilarious video

The video was shared by user @goldenchilidog and features Chili, a Golden Retriever whose love for the dog park is off the charts. The clip captures the exact second Chili’s leash is removed, and the result is comedy gold. Instead of simply trotting off, Chili does what looks like a wheelie, back legs kicking off the ground as he launches forward like a cartoon character escaping jail. He doesn’t just run, he blasts off.

What makes the moment even more hilarious is the audio that’s perfectly layered over the video. It features a trending sound from “Parks and Recreation,” where the character Ben Wyatt says, “Okay, well, that’s interesting. You know why?” to which Leslie Knope responds, “Why?” Ben then replies, “Because…” before abruptly running off with the sound of quick footsteps fading out.

The timing of Chili’s dramatic escape, synced with this iconic line, makes it feel like he is literally sprinting away from responsibilities, much like the meme it was based on. The trend itself became popular on TikTok in early 2023. As such, it is often used to humorously depict someone fleeing a tough conversation or awkward moment. Chili, however, has given it a whole new spin.

At the time of writing, the video amassed over 15.4 million views and 1.2 million likes. Comments poured in from amused viewers who couldn’t get enough of Chili’s sudden launch. “Bro did a wheelie,” one person wrote. Another added, “He really went ‘HEEHAWWWW.’” One particularly accurate observation said, “His legs moved faster than his body.” And many agreed on one thing: “This is the best use of this sound, hands down.”
