Big Mastiff Dog Breed Rises Up US’ Most Popular Dog Breed Charts

French Bulldogs may still dominate as the most popular dog breed in the U.S., but a newer contender is rapidly climbing the ranks. The Cane Corso — a powerful and protective Italian Mastiff — has seen a remarkable rise in popularity over the past 10 years, signaling a dramatic shift in breed preferences.

Cane Corso is gaining popularity among US dog owners

Known for its imposing stature and loyal demeanor, the Cane Corso has jumped from being nearly 50th in popularity a decade ago to securing the 14th spot in the latest rankings released by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Originally bred as Roman war dogs and later used as farmhands and hunters, Cane Corsi — the plural form of the breed’s name — are now sought after as family protectors and capable competitors in dog sports.

Unlike the outgoing and social French Bulldog, which has been a favorite for its low-maintenance grooming and exercise needs, the Cane Corso demands careful training and a firm understanding of the breed’s temperament. According to Maryland-based breeder Vickie Venzen, the personality of a Cane Corso can vary widely, from calm and reserved to more intensely protective. “You can’t be so foolish as to think you can put it in any situation and the dog will understand,” she explained, as per the Associated Press.

Experts also worry that the Cane Corso’s growing popularity may lead to misconceptions. Social media often portrays the breed as a tough guardian, but enthusiasts caution that these dogs are also highly sensitive to their families and need careful handling. When trained properly, they can excel in dog sports, serve as loyal protectors, or even learn unexpected skills like paddleboarding, as one of Venzen’s dogs demonstrated.

As the French Bulldog maintains its top spot with nearly 74,500 new registrations in 2024 — slightly down from the previous year — the Cane Corso’s rise reflects shifting trends in American dog ownership. It’s important to note, however, that AKC rankings only account for purebred registrations, excluding mixed breeds. While some dog enthusiasts follow trends, animal welfare advocates encourage potential owners to consider adopting from shelters, where many wonderful dogs — both purebred and mixed — await loving homes.
