Being a mom is no easy feat, and it seems that dogs aren’t exempt from needing a little me time. One exhausted mama dog proved just how much she needed a break when a now-viral video captured her clever escape from her demanding litter of puppies.
Mama dog takes a deserved break from her litter of puppies in viral video
A stray dog named Misty, who had recently given birth to six puppies, was rescued from a remote fly-in community in Canada. These isolated communities — accessible only by helicopter or floatplane — face unique challenges, including limited resources and the high cost of everyday items like pet food. Northern Reach Network, a volunteer-run organization in Ontario, facilitated Misty’s rescue. They help relocate stray animals to foster homes or permanent families. When Misty arrived in the care of Amie, the organization’s president, she was severely underweight and in desperate need of rest and nourishment.
Despite her tough circumstances, Misty’s story took a turn shortly after her arrival. A video posted to Northern Reach’s TikTok page shows her taking refuge in an unexpected spot. While her six energetic puppies clamor for attention in their pen, the camera pans to reveal Misty perched inside a high cardboard box across the room, keeping a watchful eye on her little ones but enjoying a much-needed moment of peace. The caption humorously reads, “When mom is done with her babies!!! lmao”
TikTok users couldn’t get enough of Misty’s relatable moment. One user joked, “my cat threw her kittens in the garbage so yours is more maternal than mine at least lol.” Meanwhile, another quipped that Misty was simply prioritizing self-care. Many shared similar stories of their own dogs hiding from puppies during the weaning phase.
According to Amie, Misty now has a setup where she can retreat for some quiet while still tending to her litter as needed. The foster mom described Misty as incredibly “attentive” yet appreciative of little luxuries like basking in the sun and enjoying a good brush. “After everything she has been through Misty is an amazing, resilient girl,” Amie told Newsweek.
