Kirk Herbstreit reveals Ben’s cancer had spread through his organs

Kirk Herbstreit recently announced that his pet dog, Ben, passed away due to cancer. The former college football player paid tribute to his canine companion on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), noting that it was “really hard to write” the post. The Golden Retriever was a fan-favorite on college campuses as he accompanied his owner across the country to cover college football.

In the tear-jerking post, Herbstreit informed Ben’s fans that the cancer had spread to multiple organs. The family decided to put him down after they were told by medical professionals nothing could be done. In a previous Instagram post, the sportscaster noted that the canine’s condition had been getting worse by the day after his second chemo injection on Oct. 23. He couldn’t walk and had stopped consuming food altogether.

Kirk Herbstreit noted that he had previously had several pet dogs but Ben was especially close to his heart. The Golden Retriever was a certified emotional support dog and thus left a lasting mark on many people’s lives. Herbstreit stated, “He and I could communicate..he and I understood each other and had each others backs.”

In a follow-up post, the former college football player expressed his gratitude for everyone checking in on him. While he acknowledged he was having a “tough day” due to the unfortunate news, knowing his pup touched so many lives brought some solace. He noted, “Thank you for taking the time to reach out and sharing such beautiful words about Ben.”
