Several dogs in the system continue to wait for their forever home and be a part of a family. Emerald, a Boxer Mix, has spent almost five years waiting to get adopted. The Ohio shelter dog was in poor condition when she was rescued in October 2019. Emerald has been at the shelter for many years but has yet to find her forever home.

Per 19 News, Healthy Hearts and Paws Project founder Jason Cooke shared that Emerald was rescued from a “disgusting” Youngstown apartment. She was suffering from skin conditions and had “horribly” overgrown nails. Cooke also revealed that the home where Emerald was rescued from reeked of urine as the pup was not taken outside.
Emerald’s coat recovered after getting treated by a veterinarian. She was given medicated baths and a special diet for her recovery. The Petfinder page for Emerald states that she still has some skin allergies, for which she requires a daily pill of Apoquel. It also shares that Emerald loves playing and receiving belly rubs. She is “dog selective” and also lives with cats that do not “bother” her. Emerald would prefer a home with “no small kids” as she does not “like to share toys.”
The page also notes that Emerald is a “people pleaser” and that she will “work hard for treats!” The pup is house-trained and has up-to-date vaccinations. 19 News notes that Emerald tested negative for heartworm. The project worked on getting her potty trained and walking on a leash since she did not need treatment for a disease.
A video of Emerald shows the Ohio shelter dog taking a stroll, seemingly with a caretaker. She pays attention and pauses when she’s asked to look behind. The pup then continues to enjoy her stroll after taking a poo break.
