Jennifer Hearn and her Irish Setter, Tawny, went on their usual hike on Sunday, June 9. However, when her family noticed the duo still hadn’t returned home after nighttime, they reported her missing. They informed the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office that they found her car parked near the trailhead, but she was nowhere to be seen.

Hearn is a regular at the Triangle Peak Trail and usually hikes it about three to four times a week. However, the trail is steep and not frequented by others, per Fox News. Moreover, its rocky terrain makes it more likely for visitors to have unfortunate accidents. So, a Mountain Rescue Aspen volunteer team immediately started searching for the missing hiker and her beloved dog.

They couldn’t find the 74-year-old and her furry friend even after being at it beyond midnight. The following day, they continued looking for the duo, asking for assistance from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Search and Rescue Dogs of the United States. The Mountain Rescue Aspen team was expanded to 30 volunteers, who also had assistance from a multi-mission aircraft, a helicopter, and a dog and handler team.

Fortunately, after two days of rescue efforts, the missing hiker and her dog were found on Tuesday, June 11. The rescue crews found Tawny first, who was near a home in that area. This helped narrow down the search area significantly, which helped the search team finally rescue Hearn from the side of Triangle Peak. According to the Denver Post, the 74-year-old is receiving medical help, but further information isn’t available.
