Chihuahua Is the Most Popular Dog Breed, Research Shows

Dogs are among the most popular choices when looking for furry companions. However, the dog breed of choice varies from person to person. Recent U.S. News & World Report research noted that popular dog breeds vary drastically by location. However, one dog breed reigned supreme and was found to be the most popular pick among pet parents in the United States.

According to research by the U.S. News & World Report, the Chihuahua is the most popular dog breed in the U.S. However, the city-by-city study observed that the dog breed wasn’t the top pick in any populous city. Instead, the most populated cities of the U.S. prefer having a Golden Retriever, Goldendoodle, French Bulldog, Shih Tzu, or German Shepherd as their companion.

However, in their research studying the most popular dog breeds in different states, they noted that the Chihuahua reigned supreme in 21 of the 50 states in the U.S. Chihuahuas comprise 4% of the pet dog population in the U.S. Furthermore, people in New Mexico especially love the breed, representing about 7% of all pets in that state.

The Chihuahua is followed by the French Bulldog, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and Shih Tzu, who make up the top five. Following this, the Goldendoodle, Yorkshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Pit Bull, and Labrador Retriever make up the top ten most popular dog breeds. However, Labrador Retrievers have found several positions in the top 25 list. The pups with black coats are the most popular, followed by yellow and chocolate.

The research also observed that smaller dog breeds tend to be more popular among people in the U.S. They are favored in cities with high apartment dweller populations, considering smaller dog breeds are more suitable for apartment life. Their minimal space requirements make them suitable for smaller apartments, which makes the Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, and Yorkshire Terrier the top picks among apartment dwellers.
